Parks & Recreation Master Plan

In order to build on the success of the Parks Improvement Initiative, the City must better understand the current usage of our existing parks, the needs and desires of our community, and the allocation of funding needed to implement potential park improvements system-wide. The City of Thomasville recently hired a consulting company, Brandstetter Carroll Inc., to conduct a Comprehensive Parks Assessment and help us create a Parks and Recreation Master Plan.

The goal of the parks and recreation master planning process is to establish a shared, clearly defined vision for the City’s parks and recreation system that is driven by community input. A variety of engagement methods will be used to gather input including open house events, focus groups, online and in-person surveys, and public workshops to review recommendations.

What to Expect

This is a major undertaking that will take nine months to a year to complete. The main objectives and benchmarks for the project are:

  • evaluation of existing system and programs
  • community engagement and needs assessment
  • master plan vision, goals, and objectives
  • system recommendations and action planning
  • master plan reports and final presentations

The process will assess what we have, determine what the community wants and how to meet their needs, and then based on those findings, inform a comprehensive Parks & Recreation Master Plan. The resulting master plan will provide guidance for both short and long-range planning related to parks and recreation in the community and establish a baseline set of standards for park facilities and recreational programming system-wide.
