TFR REMINDS RESIDENTS TO CHECK DETECTORS WHEN SPRINGING FORWARD Article PhotoDaylight savings times begins this Sunday, March 11th, and Thomasville Fire Rescue reminds citizens that now is also the ideal time to change batteries and test home smoke detectors.

“We change our clocks twice each year, so that’s a perfect reminder to also take time to change your smoke alarm batteries and to also test them to be sure they are working properly,” said Tim Connell, Fire Marshal. “Smoke alarms are a key part of a home fire escape plan. When there is a fire, smoke can spread very quickly. Having a working smoke alarm can give you the early warning you need to get outside quickly.”

TFR recommends that citizens install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. “Consider the size of your home,” said Connell. “Large homes may need extra smoke alarms. Also, smoke alarms should be on the ceiling or high on a wall. Keeping smoke alarms away from the kitchen will help to reduce false alarms. We recommend placing them at least 10 feet from the stove.”

According to Connell, there are different alarms available using more technology than alarms of the past. “These alarms utilize technology to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, while also helping to reduce false alarm warnings,” he said. “Using interconnected smoke alarms is also recommended, because when one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.”

Connell also said testing smoke alarms monthly is important. “Testing the alarms is very easy. Just press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.” He also recommends replacing smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. “It’s a small investment that can give you and your family peace of mind. Roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or in homes where smoke alarms have failed.”

TFR provides free smoke detectors to residents. For more information, Please contact the fire department at (229) 227-4099 to schedule an installation appointment.
