TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE FOR EAST JACKSON STREET

Posted on

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the work required to complete this repair was more extensive than anticipated. The road is expected to reopen around 2 pm today.

Beginning Thursday, May 10, 2018, City of Thomasville Utilities’ Wastewater Department will replace a sanitary sewer service line that crosses East Jackson Street. According to City Engineer Wayne Newsome, the work will be performed during overnight hours to minimize the impact to area motorists.

“The Wastewater Department will begin construction starting at 9:00 p.m. Thursday evening in an effort to lessen the disruption to those traveling this portion of East Jackson Street,” said Newsome. “The work is expected to be completed by 7:00 a.m. on Friday morning and will then be reopened to thru traffic.”

During the construction, the portion of East Jackson Street between Orchard Lane and Clanton Street will be closed to thru traffic. Westbound thru traffic will be detoured onto Clanton Street to Remington Avenue, west on Remington Avenue to Orchard Lane, and then north to tie back into East Jackson Street. Eastbound thru traffic will be diverted south onto Orchard Lane, east on Remington Avenue, and north on Clanton Street to tie back into East Jackson Street.

“We reviewed and discussed multiple options to avoid closing a major roadway, but our Utility Operations and Engineering staff agreed that closing the road was the only safe way to complete the work,” Newsome said. “We also agreed that performing the work at night after businesses in the area have closed would be most ideal. We’ll work as quickly and as safely as possible so that this important roadway is open for traffic first thing the next morning.”
