THOMASVILLE FIRE RESCUE SPONSORS 911 MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMB Article PhotoTHOMASVILLE, GA – September 8, 2016 – Fifteen years ago on September 11, 2001, over 3,000 people were killed during terrorist attacks involving airliners aimed at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and a field in Pennsylvania. The 3,000 individuals who lost their lives that day included 343 firefighters, 63 police officers and eight emergency medical technicians who paid the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the attack on the World Trade Center. On September 12, 2016, these fallen heroes will be remembered during the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, an event sponsored nationally by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and locally by Thomasville Fire Rescue, the Thomasville YMCA, and CNS.

“This is the third year that we’ve honored those public safety officers who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center,” said Tim Connell, Assistant Chief for Thomasville Fire Rescue. “This is just a small way that we can remember the sacrifice that these officers made that September day. While everyone was running from the attack, these brave men and women were running toward it in the hopes of saving lives.”

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will require each participant to climb or walk the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Each individual will also carry with them the photo and name of one fallen hero. The climb is not timed and all participants are encouraged to complete the course at their own pace.

“The goal of this event is not to win any sort of race or trophy,” said Connell. “The purpose is to remember those who sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001, so that others could live.”

The event will be held at the Jacket’s Nest, Thomas County Central High School’s football stadium, and includes two climb sessions. Session one will be held from 5:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and session two will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Those who are unable to climb or walk are encouraged to attend the Remembrance Ceremony that will be held at 8:30 a.m.

This is the third year that the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb has been held in Thomasville and Connell said that it is a great event for families to participate in together. As part of the event, members of Thomasville Fire Rescue and the Thomasville Police Department will be climbing the stairs.

Pre-registration is available now at the Everett-Milton YMCA. The cost is $15 and includes a t-shirt for all participants. Proceeds from the event go to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
