The Thomasville Police Department (TPD) received a unanimous vote for Advanced Re-Accreditation and were designated a “Meritorious” Agency by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). This designation was awarded during CALEA’s recent winter conference in Bellevue, Washington.

The Thomasville Police Department received its first accreditation by CALEA in 1987. Since that time, Chief John Letteney noted TPD is one of the longest, continuously accredited agencies in the United States. “This re-accreditation signals our long-standing commitment to professional excellence with a focus on implementing leading practices as law enforcement and community perspectives continue to change and evolve,” stated Letteney.

The Advanced Law Enforcement accreditation is specifically designed for elite organizations striving to demonstrate professional excellence within a comprehensive range of operational and administrative functional responsibilities. Agencies participating in this program are prepared for the management of life, health, and safety issues, ensuring issues ranging from community engagement to sound personnel practices are addressed. The accreditation results in a highly performing organization with the capacity to address any operational or administrative challenges while serving as an industry leader.

According to Letteney, re-accreditation is a department-wide effort and honor. “The diligence from our staff in developing updated directives and proofs of compliance and to operate within the parameters of our written directive system and the CALEA standards is beyond commendable.”

Letteney also noted that meeting the “Advanced Re-Accreditation” requirements is about commitment to serving the community with excellence.

“Professionalism, operational guidance, positive community support, transparency, and ethical conduct are the goals that TPD continually strives to meet in order to exceed the highest professional standards of law enforcement,” said Letteney. “We will continue to strive to raise the level of our cooperative partnerships, become a model agency for others to follow, and provide our community with the very best in public safety.”
