The City of Thomasville Planning Department will host a Multimodal Transportation Plan (MMTP) Jackson Street Talk + Walk Public Information Session on a proposed demonstration project along the Jackson Street corridor. The session will be held Tuesday, May 12, 2026, beginning at 4:00 PM at Trinity Anglican Church, located at 325 W. Jackson Street.
According to City Planner Kenny Thompson, this project is part of the City’s broader MMTP initiative. “Last fall, we launched the plan with the goal of improving connectivity, safety, and accessibility for all users of Thomasville’s transportation network,” said Thompson. “The plan, which is fully funded through a grant through U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Street and Roads for All program, is dedicated to preventing roadway fatalities and serious injuries.”
The funding allows the City to proactively test safety improvements while maintaining a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility.
The upcoming demonstration project will take place along Jackson Street from Remington Avenue to College Street. As a temporary, data-driven effort, the project will install traffic control devices to modify the existing lane configuration, streamlining the roadway to three travel lanes within the project area. The goal is to safely evaluate how design changes may improve traffic flow, reduce conflicts, and enhance overall corridor function before committing to permanent capital investments.
“The purpose of the project is to field-test safety solutions and carefully evaluate their performance before pursuing more permanent improvements,” said Thompson. “It will also explore opportunities to better utilize underused space within the public right-of-way.”
Thompson said the project is intended to demonstrate how thoughtful design can create safer, more welcoming corridors for pedestrians and other non-vehicular travelers. “It complements the long-term goals and action items that are outlined in the Thomasville: Blueprint 2028. Our strong foundation of citywide planning initiatives reflects our broader commitment to improving quality of life while supporting economic vitality in Thomasville.”
