THOMASVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT INVESTIGATES JUVENILE IN POSSESSION OF A FIREARM ON SCHOOL CAMPUS

On Thursday, September 5, 2024, at approximately 1:45 pm, school officials at MacIntyre Park Middle School alerted the school resource officer on campus that there was a student in possession of a firearm. The student was immediately detained, and the gun was secured. The initial stages of the investigation indicated that no direct threat towards any student or staff member was made by the juvenile in possession of the firearm. This investigation is active and ongoing, with additional charges possibly being made.

“The safety and security of students and staff members in our school system is always a primary concern,” said Chief of Police Wade Glover. “With the tragic incident that recently occurred in Winder, GA, it is understood that parents are deeply concerned and highly vigilant about the safety of their children while they are at school. I want to assure our citizens that the Thomasville Police Department is committed to ensuring that our community and are schools are safe.”

According to Chief Glover, Thomasville City School officials and the Thomasville Police Department are united in their commitment to school safety, and at the request of school officials, additional security resources have been provided. “I’m sure all parents, students and school staff noticed an increased presence of TPD Officers around school campuses today,” he said. “This increased presence has been implemented in an effort to assure parents that we understand their concerns. Rest assured that the safety of our children is always a priority, and TPD’s presence will continue as part of our ongoing effort to help ease any concerns about the safety and security on campus.”

“The Thomasville Police Department has zero tolerance for any unauthorized person bringing a weapon on any school campus,” said Chief Glover. “This incident is being taken seriously, and we are putting every effort to hold anyone involved accountable for their actions.”
