CITY HOSTS REMINGTON AVENUE STREETSCAPE OPEN HOUSE

In June 2019, the City of Thomasville began the process of creating an improvement plan for one of Thomasville’s most important roadways, Remington Avenue. The final concept design received approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission in August 2019 and the Thomasville City Council voted in September 2019 to complete the engineering and design phase of the project. Now, an open house is planned that will allow the community an opportunity to view the final design concepts.

“The process to gather public input for this important project was quite extensive,” said Sherri Nix, Public Outreach Manager. “We held Discovery Walks, Public Input Workshops, and Open Houses, all designed to gather input from citizens who both live and travel this popular roadway. In the end, we gathered a lot of valuable information on the improvements our community felt would most enhance Remington Avenue for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists.”

Kenny Thompson, City Planner, said that although the initial design concepts were shared in 2019, the open house will allow the public an opportunity to see the more detailed engineered drawings. “City staff and engineers from Kimley-Horn Engineering Consultants will be available to give updates on the project, answer questions, and share drawings of the overall corridor plan and design elements at key intersections,” he said.

“Our community shared many common elements they wanted to see incorporated into the final design, such as protecting the residential character of the street, reducing traffic speed, allowing safe crossing for pedestrians, and improving safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists,” said Thompson. “We’ve worked with Kimley-Horn to be sure that all of these items were considered in the final plans and we look forward to sharing this vision with our community.”

The drop-in open house will be held on November 12th from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. at the Thomas County EMS and Fire Station located at 1202 Remington Avenue. The streetscape project area includes Remington Avenue from East Pinetree Boulevard to Kern Street and from Kern Street to Smith Avenue. Construction is expected to begin in 2021 and will take 12-18 months to complete.
