IMPROVEMENTS AHEAD FOR WEST JACKSON STREET

The City of Thomasville has announced an improvement project for West Jackson Street. Beginning Tuesday, February 20th, West Jackson Street from the railroad crossing at Remington Ave. to South Pinetree Boulevard will be re-striped. This will include all lane lines, turn arrows, stop bars and crosswalks.

“Our goal for restriping this area of West Jackson Street is to help improve driver safety along this corridor by enhancing visibility of the roadway lane markings, turn arrows, etc.,” said Assistant City Engineer Wayne Newsome. “Similar improvements were made to East Jackson Street in late 2017 and were very well received. We heard from many in our community who wanted to see the improvements continue further down Jackson.”

During the construction phase, lanes may be temporarily reduced, as re-striping work is underway. “We understand the work may be inconvenient to motorists, residents and business owners,” said Newsome. “Our crews will work as quickly as possible to reopen any temporary closures so that the impact is lessened as much as possible.”

Newsome said that the project is expected to take approximately 2-3 days to complete and will be funded by 2012 SPLOST funds, along with Local Maintenance Improvement Grant funding available through GDOT. The project will involve restriping existing pavement markings only; there are no lane reductions or other changes to the current striping on the roadway. However, plans are in the works to bring some additional enhancements to the area by returning a welcome sign to this city entrance.

“Thomasville receives many visitors that travel north to our area via U.S. 319,” said Kha McDonald, Interim City Manager. “There was a sign at this entrance previously, but it was damaged several years ago. Our plans are to return a sign with landscaping to this area to help enhance the aesthetics of one of our busiest gateways.”

McDonald said that the sign will be in character to Thomasville and will also blend safely with the environment. For this reason, additional lighting will be installed to help improve driver safety. “Our goal is to make this important and well-traveled corridor one that is both safe for drivers and welcoming to visitors that enter our city on West Jackson Street.”
