On September 11, 2001, over 3,000 people were killed during terrorist attacks involving airliners aimed at the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and in a thwarted attempt that crashed in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania. The 3,000 individuals who lost their lives that day included 343 firefighters, 63 police officers and eight emergency medical technicians who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the attack on the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2018, these fallen heroes will be remembered during the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, an event sponsored nationally by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and locally by Thomasville Professional Firefighters Association Local 2084, the Thomasville YMCA, Synovus, Thomasville Toyota, Thomasville Ford, Hurst Boiler and CNS.

“No one forgets where they were or what they were doing when news broke that a plane had struck one of the iconic Twin Towers in Downtown Manhattan,” says Marshall Green, President of the TPFA (Thomasville Professional Firefighters Association) Local 2084. “Together we watched this tragedy unfold as our country and our culture was forever changed.”

The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb will require each participant to climb or walk the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Each individual will also carry with them the photo and name of one fallen hero. The climb is not timed and all participants are encouraged to complete the course at their own pace. The TPFA Local 2084 —who are hosting and organizing the event—will be joined by members of the Thomas County Fire Department, along with members of the Cairo, Moultrie and Valdosta Fire Departments as well.

“We dedicate ourselves to never forget those courageous New York firefighters, law enforcement officers, and EMS members who ran headlong into danger and sacrificed their lives in an attempt to rescue those trapped inside the Towers before they collapsed,” said Green. “We hope that the community comes and joins us in honoring these brave men and women.”

The 9-11 Stair Climb is on Tuesday, September 11th at the Thomas County Central High School’s Jackets Nest Football Stadium. Registration will begin at 5:30 a.m. followed by the climb until 11:00 a.m. The second session begins at 4:00 p.m. and lasts until 7:00 p.m. Those who are unable to climb or walk are encouraged to attend the Remembrance Ceremony that will be held at 8:30 am.

Pre-registration is available now at the Everett-Milton YMCA and Thomasville Fire Rescue. Click here for a copy of the registration form. The cost is $20 and includes a t-shirt for all adult participants. Proceeds from the event will go towards funding the memorial in front of TFR Station 1 on Crawford Street.
