CITY OF THOMASVILLE OFFERS COLD WEATHER TIPS

Posted on

While we’ve been experiencing mild temperatures this winter season, an arctic cold front is expected to spread across the Southeast Thursday night and early Friday morning, bringing temperatures in the upper teens and low 20’s.

Cold weather can cause havoc for you and your belongings, so the City of Thomasville encourages you to remember the “4 P’s,” known as people, pets, pipes, and plants. All are vulnerable during extreme weather conditions, and here are ways to protect them:

  • People: Check on older neighbors and family members that are more sensitive to colder weather.
  • Pets: Bring your pets inside or provide them a warm shelter.
  • Pipes: Cover and insulate pipes and allow a water faucet to run at a thin stream when temperatures are expected to be below freezing. Know where your water shut off valves are just in case pipes freeze.
  • Plants: Bring plants inside if you can, or cover them to help them stay warm.

If you plan to use supplemental heating during the cold weather, these fire safety tips are also encouraged:

  • Avoid using flammable liquids to start fireplaces.
  • Never leave space heaters unattended. Turn them off when leaving a room or before sleeping.
  • Plug electric-powered space heaters directly into an outlet and never into an extension cord.
  • Never use an oven to heat your home.
