The City of Thomasville honored local winners of the Georgia Municipal Association’s “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest for sixth graders. One winner was selected from each school system as the winner for their schools. Benjamin Filston – Brookwood School, Lloydrica Hudson – Thomasville Scholar’s Academy, and Emily Potter – Thomas County Middle School were recognized by the mayor during the March 23 City Council meeting.

Hudson and Potter both received certificates recognizing their achievement and had their photo taken with Mayor Max Beverly and their teachers. Benjamin Filston was unable to attend the meeting due to a prior commitment.

The annual “If I Were Mayor, I Would…” essay contest is open to all students currently enrolled in 6th grade. Essays were 350 words or less and addressed the subject with the opening line beginning, “If I were Mayor, I would…” All essay participants at the local level have been entered into the state contest. Essays were submitted from MacIntyre Park Middle School, Thomasville Scholars Academy, Brookwood School, Thomas County Middle School and Thomasville Christian School. Essays were judged on creativity, clarity, sincerity of thought and proper use of grammar.
