The results are in, and Thomasville voters overwhelming supported a referendum that would allow the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages on Sundays in the city of Thomasville. The new law will go into effect on Monday, May 1st, making Sunday, May 7th the first Sunday that alcohol can be purchased.
The question of allowing package sales of alcohol on Sundays received 731 ‘yes’ votes and 293 ‘no’ votes. The question allowing for consumption sales, or alcohol by the drink, received 746 ‘yes’ votes and 274 ‘no’ votes.
The Thomasville City Council first scheduled a special public hearing to gain local feedback on proposed Sunday alcohol sales and/or consumption for the city of Thomasville in December 2016. A second opportunity was held in January 2017. During both hearings, Thomasville citizens had the opportunity to voice their opinion both for and against Sunday sales and consumption.
