If you’ve been out to Varnedoe Park recently, you might have noticed the basketball courts have a whole new look. This popular park area has received some upgrades that the youth of Thomasville are sure to appreciate. According to Mike Atkinson, Public Works Director, the recent upgrade was paid for using 2012 Recreation SPLOST funds.
“All of the basketball backboards were refurbished and new lines were painted on the courts,” said Atkinson. “In addition, we installed new benches, lighting and a new water fountain. The upgrade was completed with some new oak trees, landscaping and a new irrigation system.”
Councilmember Terry Scott has a special place in his heart for the Varnedoe Park basketball courts because he knows how important it is for area youth to have somewhere safe to play.
“I’m glad the City could provide this improved area for our community to enjoy,” said Councilmember Scott. “I think it will be a great area for basketball tournaments and competitions to be held, giving even more people an opportunity to enjoy this enhanced park area.”
A rededication ceremony for the basketball courts was hosted by the City of Thomasville and Councilmember Scott this summer. The park is located at 500 Varnedoe Street.
