Thomasville City Manager Alan Carson announced today that Jeremy Carter has been named the City’s new Director of Electric Engineering and Operations, effective February 21, 2020. Carter will report to Chris White, Executive Director of Public Utilities.
“Jeremy has been with the City of Thomasville for fourteen years, much of which has been spent leading the electric engineering group,” said Carson. “During his time with the City, he has proven to be a dependable leader within our organization, and I’m confident in his ability to continue the tradition of excellence that exists within this important enterprise operation.”
Carter has most recently served the City of Thomasville as the Electric Engineering Manager where he has been responsible for the management and oversight of large electrical projects, including mobile outage solutions, automated metering systems, LED lighting installations and the design and implementation of electric distribution in streetscape projects. Carter has also played a significant role in the City’s storm recovery efforts, which White feels is of particular importance to his new role.
“During the last several storms that have impacted our community, Jeremy has worked actively in the field helping to coordinate efforts between our Utilities Response Center and our line crew,” said White. “In many cases, restoring power may involve rerouting power through new means of distribution, and Jeremy has proven that he has the knowledge and experience necessary to find solutions to serve our customers.”
The City began searching for a new Director of Electric Engineering and Operations after the death of longtime City employee Bruce Whittington in November 2019. Whittington had served the City of Thomasville as Director of Electric Engineering and Operations for seventeen years and was highly respected throughout the state of Georgia. For Carter, the opportunity to serve the community in this capacity is bittersweet.
“I was fortunate to work with and learn from Bruce for most of my career,” said Carter. “I considered him both a mentor and a friend. I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue serving this organization and our community as the Director of Electric Engineering and Operations.”
Carter is a native of Thomasville and a graduate of Florida State University, where he received a Bachelors of Science degree in Electric Engineering. He and his wife Elisa – a Thomasville Police Officer – live in Thomasville with their three children.
