National Public Works WeekMay 19th through the 25th is National Public Works Week, and the City of Thomasville is proud to participate by recognizing the City of Thomasville’s Public Works professionals who serve our community. This year’s theme from the American Public Works Association (APWA), “It Starts Here,” recognizes the impact Public Works staff has in so many areas of our community.

“From transportation, construction, storm drainage, and even landscaping, our Public Works department invests much of their time and effort into ensuring that our community is beautiful and thriving,” said City Manager Alan Carson.

“Our Public Works department is comprised of 27 dedicated individuals focused on keeping our streets, parks, and cemeteries beautiful,” said Stephen Stewart, City of Thomasville Public Works Superintendent. According to Stewart, the City of Thomasville encompasses about 15 square miles with 152 miles of City streets. There are also approximately 308 acres of parks with about 115 rose beds, as well as five cemeteries.

While Public Works staff works day to day within our community, they are also on call for disaster relief efforts. “During Hurricane Michael alone, our staff worked 2,657 regular hours and 1,415 overtime hours to help restore our community,” Stewart said, “This work included cleaning up trees, large limbs, sweeping the streets and sidewalks, and repairing sign damage.”

“Our Public Works staff is dedicated to not just beautification, but also on maintaining infrastructure, facilities, and services vital to public health, quality of life, and the overall well-being of Thomasville,” Carson said, “We take this week to recognize each of these individuals and the important role they play in our community.”
