The Power of One A Celebration of Black History Month and the Unsung Heroes of Thomasville Article PhotoThe City of Thomasville is pleased to announce Mr. Larry Davis as our second unsung hero in honor of Black History Month. Mr. Davis may not be a familiar name to many, but he has contributed greatly to our community through his work in the community kitchen at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. For the last 11 years, he has been cooking and helping to provide meals to those that need it the most. In fact, last year, the community kitchen prepared and served more than 4,000 meals alone. They feed about 60 people per day each week day from January – March alone.

Mr. Davis lives next door to Good Shepherd Episcopal Church and said that over the years, he watched as Mrs. Morrisce Dockett and her husband began purchasing food and giving it to people in the neighborhood that needed it. After about 2 years, Mrs. Dockett and her husband decided to prepare hot meals instead, and they enlisted the help of Mr. Mike Lightsey. After he retired, Mr. Davis decided to help cook at the community kitchen as well. When he first began volunteering, he was not a member of Good Shepherd Episcopal Church but he later joined the congregation saying he liked what they were doing and wanted to be a part of it.

Our community is stronger because of the important contributions of people like Mr. Davis. He provides what may sometimes be the only meal someone may receive all day long, simply because he recognized a need and had a willingness to serve his fellow man. We look forward to sharing more about Mr. Davis’ story this week as we celebrate him as one of our unsung heroes.
