TEMPORARY LANE AND ROAD CLOSURES BEGINNING APRIL 17 Article PhotoBeginning Monday, April 17, 2017, City of Thomasville Utilities’ Natural Gas Department will conduct line and valve repairs on West Jackson Street. These repairs will require the temporary closure of the inside eastbound lane on West Jackson Street near College Street. The work in this lane is expected to begin after school has started on the morning of the 17th, so that school traffic will not be impacted. The work at this location is expected to be completed within a couple of hours.

After completion of the repairs at West Jackson Street and College Street, the Natural Gas Department will then close the outside westbound lane on West Jackson Street near the intersection of Branch Street in order to perform testing of the natural gas lines in this location. This lane closure will remain in effect until work is complete. While every effort will be made to expedite testing and reopen the lanes, the expected duration of this closure is unknown at this time. Work is anticipated to last no longer than two days to complete the line testing.

Traffic will be redirected around the construction zone during both West Jackson Street repairs.

Because the manhole is located in the middle of the intersection, the intersection will require a full closure.

While the repairs are ongoing, traffic on Gordon Avenue and Loomis Street will be detoured onto adjacent streets. Northbound traffic on Gordon Avenue will be detoured west on Mimosa Drive to Rosedale Avenue. Southbound traffic on Gordon Avenue will be detoured west on Hansell Street to Rosedale Avenue. Westbound traffic on Loomis Street will be detoured north on Broad Street to Hansell Street, then west on Hansell Street to Rosedale Avenue. Easbound traffic on Loomis Street will be detoured at Rosedale Avenue north to Hansell Street, then east on Hansell to Broad Street.

“The detour of traffic through the construction area is necessary to facilitate safety of the work zone for both the contractor and the traveling public,” said Wayne Newsome, Assistant City Engineer. “We recognize the inconvenience closures of our streets and roadways can cause our citizens and will work as quickly as we can to have this intersection reopened.”

Newsome said that construction is expected to be complete by Friday, April 21.
