CITY SEEKS CITIZENS' CONTINUED INPUT ON SIGN ORDINANCE

Thomasville’s Planning and Zoning Commission will hold an additional public workshop next week that is focused on reviewing the proposed draft of a new sign ordinance. The meeting will be held on Monday, September 21st at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers at the Municipal Building, located at 144 East Jackson Street. City staff said that this meeting will provide one more opportunity for the public to provide input on this important ordinance for the City of Thomasville.

“During this meeting, city staff will present a final draft copy of the proposed sign ordinance to the commission, which will include feedback gathered from previous public input sessions, staff recommendations and suggestions from the legal review,” said Kenneth Thompson, City Planner. “Next week’s workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for our public to review the draft ordinance.”

According to Thompson, the process has yielded a tremendous amount of public input. “We feel that we are certainly meeting our goal of recommending an ordinance for adoption by our City Council that will strike the proper balance between our community’s historic character and the needs of local businesses,” he said.

“The Commission is expected to make a recommendation on the ordinance during their next regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, October 5,” Thompson said. “For this reason, it is important that our citizens provide feedback at our upcoming workshop on September 21st.”

Once the final draft ordinance is again reviewed by an attorney and approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission, it will then be recommended to the City Council for their consideration. “City staff and the members of the Planning and Zoning Commission believe that the proposed draft has a strong representation of our community’s desires,” said Thompson. “However, I encourage our citizens to remain involved and join us for these final important discussions.”

All workshops and meetings of the Planning and Zoning Commission will be held in a manner that observes active Executive Orders and Health Advisories provided by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Public Health, and local health officials in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Seating will be limited and additional safety measures will be required such as, but not limited to, social distancing and temperature screenings to ensure the health and safety of meeting participants and the citizens of Thomasville. Citizens attending are encouraged to wear facial coverings.
