On Monday, October 5th, the City of Thomasville Planning and Zoning Commission approved a final draft of a proposed new sign ordinance. The approved draft will now be recommended to the City Council for their consideration.

“We are excited to recommend the approved draft of the sign ordinance to City Council,” said Sam Fink, Planning and Zoning Commission Chair. “City staff and members of the Planning and Zoning Commission worked extensively with the public to gather input in order to recommend an approved draft that has a strong representation of our community’s desires,” he added. “We feel that we have certainly met our goal of recommending an ordinance for adoption by our City Council that will strike the proper balance between our community’s historic character and the needs of local businesses,” he said.

The sign ordinance proposal will now be recommended by the Planning and Zoning Commission to City Council for consideration. “City Council will now consider the recommendation of the Planning and Zoning Commission for approval on first and second reading,” said Kenneth Thompson, City Planner. “The sign ordinance will first be discussed by City Council at their November 4th workshop before being considered for first reading at their November 9th regular meeting.”

“The sign ordinance that was approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission represents a true community effort,” said Fink. “This is an important ordinance for our community, and our goal is to make sure our City Councilmembers have ample time to consider this important document. I am proud and appreciative of the work done by the Planning and Zoning Commission, our community, and our City staff to put forth an ordinance that will positively serve Thomasville.”

All workshops and meetings of the City Council are held in Council Chambers of the Municipal Building, located at 144 East Jackson Street. Meetings are open to the public and held in a manner that observes active Executive Orders and Health Advisories provided by Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Public Health, and local health officials in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Seating will be limited and additional safety measures will be required such as, but not limited to, social distancing and temperature screenings to ensure the health and safety of meeting participants and the citizens of Thomasville. Citizens attending are encouraged to wear facial coverings. Citizens are encouraged to utilize the City Council live stream available on the City’s website, Thomasville.org.
