The City of Thomasville is applying for a 2019 Community Development Block Grant for housing improvements in the Fletcherville neighborhood area. “These grants can potentially be used for home improvement projects like new windows, roofing, and unstable foundations,” said Mollie Powell, City of Thomasville Housing and Zoning Administrator. “The possibilities are exciting- we need the community’s help to enter a successful grant application for consideration.”
Several City of Thomasville employees and volunteers have delivered information door to door to residents who live in the targeted area. “Knocking on doors gave us an opportunity to speak with local residents to help build trust in the community and answer preliminary questions about the grant,” said Powell.
Residents who live within the grant consideration area (see map below) were also invited to attend a public hearing earlier this week where additional information was shared on the grant application. “Right now, the City is trying to put together the strongest application possible so that funding can be secured,” said Barbara Reddick, Planning Director for the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission. “Securing these funds will allow for significant improvements to the project area. We are encouraging anyone who meets the grant criteria to submit an application now.”
To qualify for funding, applicants must live in the target area. Applicants must also own the home they live in. “Other requirements for the CDBG housing improvement grant are that the homeowner must be 62 years or older and meet specific income requirements. Applicants will also need to provide proof of homeowner’s insurance and payment of property taxes once the grant is awarded,” said Reddick.
Powell said that applications are being accepted now through 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. “Potential applicants can contact me for additional information or drop by our offices, located at 413 W. Jackson Street,” said Powell. Powell can be reached at molliep@thomasville.org or 229-227-3306. Additional information is also available on the City’s website, Thomasville.org.
