Downtown Thomasville is getting into the holiday spirit by decking the halls! From twinkle lights to toy soldiers, larger-than-life wreaths to beautifully draped garland, there’s a little bit of holiday magic everywhere you look. “The feelings of warm holiday wishes and cozy hometown celebrations are around every corner of downtown Thomasville,” said Christy Owens, Main Street and Special Events Manager.
“Decorating begins in October and the process is finished just in time for Thanksgiving,” said Owens. “The decorating itself is a group effort that would not be possible without the support of our City of Thomasville Electric and Public Works teams, as well as our community partners such as the TCCHS Key Club and Hands on Thomas County.” The Key Club helped wrap the trees of West Jackson Street in lights as part of the 2020 Hands on Thomas County Day. “Many helping hands are involved in making downtown look and feel as festive as possible.”
This year brings new décor additions to the downtown area. “We’re really bumping up the festive holiday setting this year,” said Madison Eaton, Special Events Coordinator. “Stroll through downtown and you’ll find stunning photo ops like the 8-foot-tall wreath and gigantic ornaments made of sparkling lights in The Ritz Amphitheater.” Visitors are encouraged to snap the perfect holiday picture in downtown this season, all while strolling between shops and tasting the flavors of the season at our many restaurants.
In addition to decorations on the streets, many downtown merchants create whimsical holiday-themed window displays and participate in the annual window decorating contest. “Many of our storefronts will be beautifully decorated this year for our highly anticipated merchant window decorating contest. Our merchants are always creative and unique with their entries, which adds to the charm of Downtown Thomasville and gives you another reason to come and enjoy all of the beautiful holiday decorations,” said Eaton. Window decorating contest voting will begin in early December. “We encourage you to stroll the downtown blocks and vote for your favorite display.”
“Whether enjoying our festive décor and atmosphere, our many shops, or our unique restaurants we encourage the practice of safe social distancing and good hand hygiene,” said Owens. “There are handwashing stations located throughout the downtown area, as well as regularly sanitized public restrooms and outdoor seating areas. We remain committed to our guests’ health and safety while still allowing socially distanced outdoor opportunities to support our downtown merchants.”
