Robert Murray Jr., City of Thomasville Downtown GroundskeeperLongtime City of Thomasville employee, Robert (“Redd”) Murray, Jr., retired on Monday, August 24th after 28 years of service to the City. He began his career with the City of Thomasville in 1992 as an Equipment Operator and went on to serve in various capacities within the Public Works Department.

“I leave behind my time with Team Thomasville filled with a lot of good memories,” said Murray Jr. “I made lifelong friendships over my 28 years and shared so many great times with co-workers, especially teammates such as Baylock Christopher, Danny Drew, and Mike Bevard.”

Chris White, Executive Director of Public Utilities, worked with Murray for nearly twenty-two years and has seen the impact made by the long-time Public Works team member. “I am amazed at the level of impact that Robert has made in every position he has held,” said White. “Whether working on our right-of-way crew, in parks and facility maintenance, or most recently as a downtown groundskeeper, he did so with a great attitude no matter the circumstances.”

“Robert is the epitome of a teammate. He always worked well with fellow team members and provided outstanding customer service to our residents,” said Stephen Stewart, Public Works Superintendent. “His attention to detail in our downtown was recognized not just by his supervisors but more importantly by our citizens and out of town visitors.”

Brian Allensworth, Urban Landscape Manager, has supervised Murray Jr. since January of 2019 and has been impressed with his overall contribution to the team. “Friendly is a great word to describe Robert. He constantly impressed visitors with his friendly and courteous approach to his duties. That friendly approach made him a team favorite. He simply had a special way of treating people, especially his teammates.”

Murray is looking forward to spending time doing things that he loves. “I look forward to traveling, fishing, and hanging out with friends. I have many great memories of my time with the City of Thomasville such as playing flag football with the Team Thomasville teams and my co-workers.”

“Robert leaves a legacy of hard work and dedication with Team Thomasville and our entire City,” said Stewart. “He leaves a void in our Public Works Department and our entire organization as a whole. He will be missed, not just for his work but, more importantly, for his great spirit and commitment to treating people with respect.”
