Beginning this month, Thomasville Fire Rescue will conduct annual fire hydrant testing within the Thomasville city limits. Testing involves “flushing” of hydrants, a controlled procedure that helps maintain the City of Thomasville’s water distribution system.
“Flushing hydrants benefits the fire department by testing the proper operation of hydrants and evaluating water flow capacity in the event of a fire,” said Thomasville Fire Rescue Chief Tim Connell. “It also removes potential sediment from distribution pipes.”
Thomasville Fire Rescue will open hydrants to check flow rates, and the increase in flow can stir up minerals and deposits that may exist as it clears them out. Water can become discolored after flushing, but no health concerns are associated with discolored water due to hydrant flushing.
“If you notice that your water appears slightly cloudy, simply allow the water to run from a faucet for a few minutes until it flows clearly again,” Connell added.
