CITY OF THOMASVILLE’S BLACK HISTORY PARADE SET FOR JUNE 18

The City of Thomasville will host the 3rd Annual Black History Parade on Saturday, June 18 at 10 am in Downtown Thomasville.

“Our Black History Parade is a wonderful opportunity to spend your morning in Thomasville and enjoy this community event,” said Madison Eaton, Tourism and Events Manager for the City of Thomasville. “We want to encourage our community to come support the parade, and while in Downtown, experience everything we have to offer. Anytime we have the opportunity to honor history, it’s a win-win for our community.”

The parade was originally scheduled to take place in February. Earlier this year, the Black History Committee, comprised of community members and City of Thomasville staff, decided to reschedule the parade to a later date due to COVID safety concerns. Rescheduling the parade opened a partnership opportunity with local Juneteenth Celebration organizers.

“Our Black History Committee members have worked with local Juneteenth organizers to create a full day of activities for the entire family,” noted Eaton. “A morning parade followed by a full afternoon of family activities will bring our community together for commemoration and fellowship. These events help create a tourism experience and encourage people from other communities to want to visit Thomasville.”

The Black History Parade will begin at the intersection of Washington and Broad Streets, turn right onto West Jackson Street, and end at North Lee Street. About 90 entries will take part in this year’s parade. Elisabeth Elzy is this year’s Grand Marshal, chosen for her tireless commitment to serving Thomasville in many volunteer capacities.

“The Black History Committee has worked hard attracting participants to create a true community gathering,” said Eaton. “This parade wouldn’t be possible without the Committee’s hard work.”

Organizers of the Juneteenth Celebration are set to kick off their event at 1 pm at the Douglass Complex on Forrest Street.
