CITY URGES CITIZENS TO PREPARE FOR TROPICAL STORM DEBBY

Posted on

The City of Thomasville is monitoring Tropical Storm Debby and encourages the community to make preparations in anticipation of severe weather in our area. Heavy rain is expected to hit the Thomas County area by mid-afternoon today, and Thomas County is currently under a tropical storm warning. Forecasts indicate Debby will develop into a hurricane once it makes landfall sometime tomorrow.

Residents are urged to prepare now including:

  • Assess your property and be sure yard furniture, trash bins, yard toys and equipment are secured or put away.
  • Be sure there is no debris on your property that can float or be blown away, as these things can block the storm drains and prevent the flow of water through our community.
  • Obtain a working NOAA Weather Radio.
  • Monitor weather situations, and be alert to changing conditions.
  • Make sure you have flashlights and batteries in case of power outages.

City of Thomasville utility customers can report a loss of utility services by calling 229-227-5499 or by registering for the Tville TextAlert system. Registration information can be found here: https://thomasville.org/report-a-utility-outage

In the event of an outage, electric crews will work to bring customers back online as quickly as possible but are unable to work safely if winds exceed 39 mph. Citizens are also encouraged to take precautions if operating a generator during a power outage and should not operate a gas generator in an enclosed area like a garage. Carbon monoxide can easily accumulate and become fatal to anyone entering these areas.

Residents on City water don’t need to stock up on bottled water and are encouraged to save those supplies for residents that depend on deep wells for water supply. The City of Thomasville’s water system is designed to operate during and after severe weather conditions.

The City of Thomasville will continue to monitor the storm's path and post updates to social media. Citizens should continue to monitor the latest forecast and local emergency management information through the following websites:
