TPD ISSUES REMINDER REGARDING RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR GOLF CART USAGE WITHIN THE CITY

Posted on

Warmer weather and the end of the school year means more and more Thomasville citizens are enjoying more time outside, many by using golf carts or other related vehicles. Whether you are using a golf cart to ride around your neighborhood or using it for convenience to travel to community events, the Thomasville Police Department reminds citizens that these types of slow-moving vehicles are regulated by the State of Georgia and, as such, operators should be sure they are following the rules of the road.

“Golf carts have grown in popularity, and their usage increases during the warmer summer months,” said Troy Rich, Chief of Police. “Most citizens don’t realize that there are certain safety regulations that must be followed when operating a golf cart, just like any other motorized vehicle. These rules are in place to protect drivers, keep the community safe and to help avoid accidents.”

According to TPD, there are several simple rules and regulations to follow when operating a golf cart:

  • Operator must be 16+ and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Golf carts are allowed on streets with a posted speed of 35 MPH or less.
  • Passengers are limited to the number of seats on the golf cart.
  • Golf carts must be equipped with brake lights, turn signals, a horn, and functioning headlights.
  • Follow all traffic laws and regulations applicable to motorized vehicles.

“It is not required to have registration, seatbelts, child restraint, placard/slow moving triangle, or insurance,” Rich said. “However, insurance is recommended.”
