May 20th through the 26th is National Public Works Week, and the City of Thomasville is proud to participate by recognizing the City’s Public Works staff, the often unsung heroes of our society, professionals who serve the public good every day with quiet dedication.
This year’s theme, “The Power of Public Works,” recognizes the impact the many facets of public works have on modern society, and pays tribute to Public Works professionals who make significant contributions to protecting our national health, safety and quality of life.
Thomasville’s Public Works Department has 29 dedicated individuals focused on keeping things running smoothly and keeping our city beautiful. The City of Thomasville encompasses approximately 15 square miles and has 152 miles of City streets. The City also has approximately 308 acres of parks with approximately 115 rose beds.
“Our Public Works staff are dedicated men and women who focus on maintaining infrastructure, facilities and services vital to the public health, quality of life, and well-being of Thomasville. Public Works staff maintain our streets and parks, including all of the roses throughout the City. They maintain our public buildings and other facilities, and they assist with the many events and festivals that take place throughout the year. ” said Kha McDonald, Interim City Manager.
Public Works is also integral to disaster relief efforts, getting out after a storm to clear away dangerous debris and returning the roads to a safe means of travel. After last year’s storms, the City’s Public Works crews put in nearly 1800 regular hours plus 200 overtime hours, clearing nearly 3000 cubic yards of debris from the community’s streets.
“We’re so proud of the City’s Public Works employees and ask our community to join us in recognizing and thanking them for their dedication to our community,” McDonald said.
