CITY RECEIVES $750000 GRANT FOR INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENT Article PhotoThe City of Thomasville was officially recognized at the fall conference of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) as one of 59 Georgia communities to receive a 2017 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The CDBG program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered by Georgia’s DCA.

“This is fantastic news for the Fletcherville community where these funds will be used,” said Jerry Pionessa, Assistant City Manager/City Engineer. “These funds will be used to make multi-infrastructure improvements that will address many problem areas for sewer, drainage and water.”

Pionessa said that the residents of the Fletcherville community were instrumental in helping to identify the areas to include in the grant application. “We began the research phase for this project back in January of this year,” said Pionessa. “During a public information session, we worked with residents to identify their concerns with sewer, drainage and water in the neighborhood. This example of how public engagement and outreach can help us to better serve our community.”

The CDBG program supports projects in Georgia’s small and rural communities that create jobs and assist citizens with low and moderate incomes. Awards ranging from $237,639 to $1 million will be used for specific projects such as water, sewer, drainage or street improvements, revitalization of targeted neighborhoods and construction of facilities such as health, youth and senior centers. Communities are required to complete their designated project within two years of receiving the award.

“CDBG grants help lay the groundwork for future growth for our communities, and are often leveraged with other funding to help them prepare for economic development opportunities,” said DCA Commissioner Christopher Nunn. “These awards are about helping each community achieve its vision and implement plans to create a bright future.”

The City of Thomasville was awarded $750,000 for multi infrastructure improvements. Additional funds will be allocated from the 2012 SPLOST. The project will include sewer rehab, water main replacement, drainage improvements, resurfacing, and sidewalk construction on various streets within the target area.
