Beginning Thursday, February 16, 2017, the eastbound lane on East Jackson Street, from Broad Street to Crawford Street, will be closed to thru traffic. This section of the street will be temporarily closed to facilitate emergency brick repair near the intersection of East Jackson Street and Broad Street.
“Unfortunately, we have an emergency situation involving some of the brick pavers near the intersection of East Jackson and Broad Streets,” said Wayne Newsome, Assistant City Engineer. “We believe the bricks are being impacted by settling that has occurred over a utility trench. While we have not performed any maintenance recently, we feel this settling is the result of previous work performed on a wastewater line some time ago.”
Newsome said that crews have verified that all utility mains and lines in the vicinity are intact, and have not directly contributed to the settling that has occurred beneath the brick pavers. The brick pavers will be removed, the area will be refilled and compacted, and the brick pavers replaced.
East bound traffic will be detoured south on Broad Street to Remington Avenue, east on Remington Avenue to Crawford Street and then north on Crawford Street back to East Jackson. The west bound lane along East Jackson Street will remain open. Businesses along this section of East Jackson Street will also remain open during repair.
“The City of Thomasville recognizes the inconvenience this work poses to both the traveling public and businesses along this segment of East Jackson Street,” said Newsome. “While this construction will interrupt travel, it should have minimal impact on businesses in the area.”
