The Power of One: A Celebration of Black History Month and the Unsung Heroes of Thomasville

Today is our final post honoring this week’s unsung hero, Dr. Gertrude Horne. Dr. Horne was very progressive in her thinking and was, in many ways, very much ahead of her time. Her niece, Andre’ Marria recalls that she was loved by the whole community, both the African American community and the white community. Before integration, it was rare for an African American woman to receive a loan from the bank, but because she was so well respected, she did just that and was able to build her...

As we give our final salute to Mr. Larry Davis and his service to the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church community kitchen, we want to share his answer when asked why he gives his time to help feed others. He said he feels this is a labor of love; he just really likes to cook and enjoys feeding people. He also shared that he stopped questioning the amount that his diners may eat long ago after a man told him once that he did so because he didn’t know when he might eat again. Such a simple...
