As we give our final salute to Mr. Larry Davis and his service to the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church community kitchen, we want to share his answer when asked why he gives his time to help feed others. He said he feels this is a labor of love; he just really likes to cook and enjoys feeding people. He also shared that he stopped questioning the amount that his diners may eat long ago after a man told him once that he did so because he didn’t know when he might eat again. Such a simple...

The Power of One: A Celebration of Black History Month and the Unsung Heroes of Thomasville

As our final tribute to Poppa D, Mr. Frank Delaney, we’d like to share a few final thoughts. When asked about some of his words of wisdom he’s given to students over the years, he says one of his favorites is, “Don’t let my ignorance cause you to be a fool.” He said that he wanted students to understand that if they knew more about something than he did, then he encouraged them to think and learn on their own. When asked what he wants his legacy to be, he answered simply, “The...

The Power of One: A Celebration of Black History Month and the Unsung Heroes of Thomasville

This week, we continue our salute to Poppa D, Mr. Frank Delaney, for Black History Month! You might know that he grew up on Pebble Hill Plantation, but what you may not know is that the house he called home for the first 23 years of his life actually crossed county lines! He said one part of the home was located in Grady County, but all you had to do was cross the hall into one of the other rooms and you were in Thomas County. That county connection seemed prophetic when... he graduated from...

He said he loved to work on the plantation and in order to work, Ms. Poe required you to have good...
