DOWNTOWN THOMASVILLE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Downtown Thomasville is open for business, and the City of Thomasville’s Main Street Program is doing its part to assist merchants during these changing times. “Our downtown merchants are using a variety of social media platforms and technology in order to continue to serve their clientele during this quickly evolving situation,” said April Norton, Main Street & Business Development Director.

Merchants are following and adapting to recommendations set forth by the Centers for Disease Control in order to prioritize their customer’s safety. Norton sees a lot of creativity being implemented by merchants. “Many of our merchants have been ramping up their online business efforts over the last week and encouraging shipping methods.”

A number of downtown retailers have been using technology for years. “Many of our retailers have been providing their customers convenient shopping options for a long time,” says Norton. “They offer great online specials and shipping options.”

Curb side pick-up for online or phone orders, which has not traditionally been offered downtown, have been implemented by a number of businesses allowing residents to remain in their vehicles when they pick up their order. “We have created designated curb side pick-up areas throughout Downtown, in an effort to accommodate our merchant’s change of operations and to maximize their creative, convenient and safe efforts to serve their customers.”

While some downtown restaurants have closed dining areas and are exclusively providing curb side service, others are adapting to social distancing guidelines by scaling back seating areas inside their dining rooms in addition to their curb side measures. “Our merchants are resilient and are truly focused on the safety and well being of their customers,” said Norton.

The City of Thomasville continues its efforts to provide preventative efforts for the residents that visit downtown. “Hand washing stations have been strategically placed around downtown and at the City’s Administration building,” says Norton. “We encourage our residents to follow recommended handwashing guidelines while supporting their favorite local businesses.”

“It is important that our residents and merchants work together in order to follow CDC recommendations,” said Norton. “The Thomasville community always comes together in support of each other and these circumstances have proven no different.” Norton says that the National Main Street Program has provided best practices and resources available to small businesses in support of their continued operations, and Thomasville is capitalizing on these resources.
