Last month, the City of Thomasville kicked off the public input sessions for the Remington Avenue Streetscape project. This process included a series of Discovery Walks and Public Input Workshops, all designed to gather information about what improvements citizens would like to see for this important roadway. On July 16th, the next phase of the improvement project will allow the community to view the preliminary concepts their ideas helped to create.
“During last month’s public input sessions, we gathered a lot of valuable information on the improvements participants felt would most improve Remington Avenue for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists,” said Sherri Nix, City of Thomasville Public Outreach Manager. “It is exciting to now present those ideas back to our community at a Concept Open House where preliminary concept designs will be shared.”
The streetscape project area includes Remington Avenue from East Pinetree Boulevard to Kern Street and from Kern Street to Smith Avenue. One objective of the project is to consider the important role that the public right-of-way plays in moving and connecting people.
“Input during the Discovery Walks and Public Input Workshops was overwhelmingly positive and consistent,” said Kenny Thompson, City Planner. “Common elements include protecting the residential character of the street, reducing traffic speed, allowing safe crossing for pedestrians, including mutli-use sidewalks for people walking and biking, and improving safety at major intersections, such as roundabouts and traffic signals.”
Citizens who were unable to attend the preliminary sessions will still have the opportunity to provide their feedback on the project during the session on July 16th. “It is important that our final plan includes the input from those that live and travel this area,” said Nix. “Because of this, we will continue to accept additional input at the Open House that will be used to create the final concept.”
Once a final plan is developed, the concept will then be presented to the Planning and Zoning Commission for approval before going before the Thomasville City Council for vote. If the concept plan is approved, the project will move into final engineering and design. Construction would not begin until 2021 and will take 12-18 months to complete.
The public is invited to drop in between 9:15 am – 6:30 pm to view the preliminary designs at the Concept Design Open House on July 16th in the Flipper Room at the Thomas County Public Library, located at 201 N. Madison Street. Planning staff will make presentations at 9:15 am, 12:00 pm, 3:00 pm and 5:30pm.
