The City of Thomasville was recently honored to be the host city for the Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus (GACVB) Tourism Talks luncheon and networking event. In partnership with Atlanta Magazine, over 75 tourism industry leaders across the State of Georgia and beyond made their way to Pebble Hill Plantation in Thomasville on November 6 to discuss the myths behind hotel/motel tax while navigating through the truths behind this tax which plays a vital role in Thomasville’s economic vitality.

The Georgia Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus is a resource for destination marketing organizations in Georgia to maximize the economic impact of tourism via industry education, professional development, and legislative awareness. The goal of GACVB’s hosting of regional tourism talk luncheons is to discuss current trends, challenges, and developments in the tourism sector.

Mary Patchunka-Smith, Tourism Manager with the City of Thomasville, expressed her passion for Tourism in Thomasville stating, “Tourism is more than just an economic driver; it is a bridge that connects our community with the world through movement and unique experiences. It allows us to share our rich history, diverse culture, and the warmth of our hospitality. Together, we are serving not just our visitors, but each other by fostering an environment where everyone can thrive.”

Guests were able to explore Thomasville to engage with local businesses, experience town traditions, and meet a community of people who call Thomasville home. Valuable time spent touring allowed networkers to collaborate and share ideas that elevate the tourism experience in each of our communities that make a small town like Thomasville, Georgia special.

Sites such as the Jack Hadley Black History Museum, Thomasville History Center, Lapham-Patterson House, 1861 Distillery, and a History Tour given by Taste of Thomasville were discovered followed by a wind-down event at Hubs & Hops sponsored by StyleBlueprint, an online magazine geared toward southern lifestyle, travel, and trailblazing moments. Guests had dedicated time in their schedule to embark on what makes Downtown Thomasville so special by spending time shopping and tasting local favorites.

City Manager Chris White stated, "the leaders who were in attendance all play a part in the efforts to help showcase the unique attractions, rich history, and vibrant culture that make Georgia a premier destination. The tourism industry allows us to connect people to experiences that enrich their lives and strengthen our local economies. The City of Thomasville is proud to be an example of that success for Georgia and beyond.”
