As the new school year approaches, the Thomasville Police Department (TPD) is urging residents to prioritize safety by slowing down, avoiding distractions, and adhering to posted school zone signage. With increased traffic and children walking or biking in school areas, it's crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and aware of speed detection cameras in school zones.
“Our primary concern is the protection of our children from traffic-related fatalities by following the designated speed limits within school zones,” stated Thomasville Police Chief Wade Glover. “We encourage our residents and visitors to be extra cautious of school buses on the road and aware of children walking or biking in school zone areas.”
Speed detection cameras are strategically located in school zones throughout the City of Thomasville, including:
- South Broad Street (near Jerger Elementary School)
- East Jackson Street (near Thomasville High School)
- West Jackson Street (near Harper Elementary School)
The speed limit in these areas is 35 mph; however, when the yellow school zone lights are flashing from 7:00 am to 8:30 am and 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, the speed limit is reduced to 25 mph. New warning messages have been painted on roads to mark school zones. Additionally, pole-mounted radars will soon be installed to alert drivers of their excessive speed.
“We want drivers to understand where the school zones start and end to not only make these areas safer but to prevent citations,” noted Glover.
When speed violations are detected by the cameras, they are reviewed and approved by a sworn officer before a citation is issued and mailed to the vehicle's registered address. While these citations do not affect a driver’s history, failure to pay will result in a hold on the vehicle registration.
TPD encourages patience when traveling through school zones and waiting in school drop-off lines. “We should all recognize that everyone has somewhere to be, and many are adjusting to a new routine,” said Glover. “Be courteous and patient so we all remain safe.”
Additional tips include:
- Stay alert and avoid using cell phones while driving; children can be unpredictable and may dart out in front of vehicles.
- Remember, it’s illegal to pass a school bus with its stop sign extended.
- Allow extra time to travel on roadways to adjust to potential increased traffic.
