Starting next week, the City of Thomasville will begin the process of creating an improvement plan for one of Thomasville’s most popular roadways. The Remington Avenue Streetscape project will kick off with several public events related to the upcoming improvement project. According to organizers, the purpose of next week’s events is to gather input from the community that will help shape the future of Remington Avenue.
“Remington Avenue is an important roadway in Thomasville,” said Sherri Nix, Public Outreach Manager. “It is important that we gather information from our citizens who both live in and travel this area to help us design a plan that will ultimately improve this roadway. Whether you live in the area or travel Remington as a motorist, pedestrian or bicyclist, your input is important.”
During the discovery walks, participants will travel together to several locations along Remington Avenue where the group will observe potential areas for improvement. “We will provide transportation and then together investigate the areas where opportunities for improvements exist,” said Nix. “The streetscape project area includes Remington Avenue from East Pinetree Boulevard down to Kern Street and from Kern Street to Smith Avenue.”
“The Remington Avenue Streetscape project will provide both social and economic benefits,” said Kenny Thompson, City of Thomasville Planner. “In addition to improvements for car travel, the project will consider how to make the street more accessible for other modes of transportation including pedestrians and bicyclists.”
Thompson said that safe and inviting streets encourage walking and biking and provide more recreational spaces that encourage healthier, active lifestyles. “The streetscape project will consider the important role that the public right-of-way plays in moving and connecting people so our community can truly thrive,” he said.
Nix said that once these engagement sessions are complete, City planners will then begin work on a designa plan that includes all of the input gathered. “Our goal is to provide a report back to the community later this summer where we will share preliminary concepts with the community.”
The public is encouraged to attend one of the discovery walks and public input workshops. The workshops will be held Tuesday, June 4 from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.; Wednesday, June 5 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.; and Thursday, June 6 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. All of the discovery walks and public input workshops will start and end at the Thomas County EMS and Fire Station, located at 1202 Remington Avenue.
