CSX TRANSPORTATION TO REPLACE RAILROAD CROSSINGS Article PhotoBeginning Monday, October 29th, CSX Transportation will begin replacing railroad crossings within the city limits of Thomasville. The closings will continue through Monday, November 5, 2018. Motorist should expect delays and detours while the crossings are being replaced.

“CSX Transportation replaces rail lines, including cross ties, rails and boots every 8-10 years as part of our regular maintenance program,” said Matt Brock, CSX Project Manager. “With this replacement, CSX will be installing rubber boots on the road crossing on each side of the rail lines instead of wood. This allows a smoother transition for motorists when crossing the railroad tracks, and the rubber boots last much longer than the average 2-3 years of wooden boots.”

The schedule for crossing replacements within the city limits of Thomasville is listed below. Motorists are urged to use caution when driving in the following areas of construction.

  • Tuesday, October 30 North Broad St. and Fletcher St.
  • Wednesday, October 31 South Madison St. and South Dawson St.
  • Thursday, November 1 Susie Way and Market St.
  • Monday, November 5 West Jackson St. and East Pinetree Blvd.

Each crossing will close at 5:00 pm on the day of construction. Work is expected to be completed on the cross ties, boots and rails overnight with paving work continuing the following day. There could be some adjustments to the schedule depending upon number of rail ties needed within certain portions of the railroad tracks. CSX uses an average of 1,400 -1,500 rail road ties per mile and can replace approximately 1 ½ miles of tracks per day.

While directional workers will be onsite to assist traffic, motorists should expect some delays while this work is being completed.
