US NAVY BAND COMMODORES JAZZ ENSEMBLE COMING TO THOMASVILLE FOR FREE CONCERT Article PhotoThe U.S. Navy Band Commodores jazz ensemble is coming to the Thomasville Municipal Auditorium on Tuesday, October 30th at 7:30 p.m. for a free concert. Jazz is America’s music and the Commodores, the Navy’s premiere jazz ensemble, have been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for almost 50 years. They have appeared on TV shows, played nearly all major jazz festivals and toured across the United States and abroad.

One of the Navy Band’s main responsibilities involves touring the country. All of the band’s primary performing ensembles embark each year on concert tours throughout the country, allowing the band to reach audiences that do not have regular opportunities to see the band perform. Thomasville is one of only 19 cities to host a performance by the band during its 2018 tour.

“For many years, Navy bands have been where it matters, when it matters, just like the rest of our Navy,” says Capt. Kenneth Collins, U.S. Navy Band commanding officer. “Today we have sailors performing around the world, improving relations with our allies abroad as well as telling the Navy story here at home.”

The band has been touring the country since 1925. This vibrant and dynamic group strives for musical excellence and the pursuit of new and exciting ways to communicate with their audiences. Almost all of the sailors in the Navy Band have undergraduate degrees in music, and most have graduate degrees.

“We’ve been fortunate to have some of the great American bands- like the Navy Sea Chanters and the U.S Airforce Band- come to Thomasville,” says Sherri Nix, member of the City of Thomasville marketing department. “These are some of the best musicians in the country, putting on a free family-friendly show for our community and visitors. All are invited to attend the concert.”

The concert is free and open to the public. Advanced tickets are available at the Thomasville Visitors Center (144 East Jackson Street) and will also be available at the door. For more information, please visit www.thomasvillega.com or call the Visitors Center at 229-228-7977.
